Catia- A 3D CAD Design Software
As many of you are aware, I have over 30 years of experience in the engineering design field. Over the past few years, I have taken it upon myself to conduct career guidance seminars for mechanical engineering students, particularly from Maharashtra, India. Each year, I conduct not less than 50 to 60 seminars. I see this as a way to share my knowledge with young aspiring engineers on career opportunities in their sector.
This is important as they are at a crucial juncture of their lives and the industry itself is fluid with rapid changes is skill requirements. In this post, I will take up a few common questions that I am asked regarding CATIA. A few of these FAQ’s are:
What is CATIA?
Should I get CATIA training?
Where are the job opportunities in India?
Here are my answers:
About CATIA –
CATIA is a leading commercial software developed by Dassault Systemes, France. It is an abbreviation of Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application and is a part of Dassault’s Product Lifecycle Management ( PLM) suite.
It is a multi-platform CAD/ CAM / CAE software. CATIA can be used for many stages of product development process like conceptualization, design, manufacturing and engineering. CATIA has excellent surfacing capabilities for reverse engineering, complex shape designing, styling and class A surface modeling. It can be used to design large assemblies using either Top – Down or Bottom – Up design methodology.
CATIA can be customized using its Application Programming Interface ( API ). Visual Basic or C++ languages are used for customization.
CATIA Training –
It is user friendly. CATIA CAD training is available In India. Engineers aspiring for a career in design are going for it. The best option is any well known CAD training center which is recognized by a good University or Dassault. At the end of the CATIA classes ensure that you know the software commands along with their application in design of automobile parts of plastic and sheet metal. CATIA surfacing is commonly used in design of these parts. Hence ensure that you learn surfacing well.
Job opportunities for CATIA –
Globally CATIA is used Aerospace, Automobile, Defense, Industrial Equipment, Consumer Goods, Architecture, Ship Building etc. industries.
Indian Automobile industry has recently grown to a global standard. Many Indian Auto manufacturers and their ancillary industry are using Catia. E.g. Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ashok Leyland, HAL, HCL, BEHR, Faurecia, Johnson Controls etc.
All such companies offer very good career opportunities for CATIA professionals in design related jobs.
